My Two Cents on feminism as an Incoming legal Practitioner
I'm sure everyone has heard the Word feminism, but have you as an Individual or as a group of persons taken time to go through the real meaning of the Word.
Feminism is defined by the Oxford Language Dictionary as the advocacy of women's rights on the basis of the equality of the Sexes. It advocates for equal rights, opportunities and treatments for both genders. In my opinion, feminism is a movement, which empowers Women to Progress, succeed, excel and make impact in life.
As a young man, I have sisters, both biological and the one's life gave me, I have a Mother, a lot of female friends and One day I'll be in a relationship and eventually have a Wife. I Want to see all my Women succeed and Prosper, to even show how i'm concerned about Women Rights and Activism, I did Gender Law as my elective in 200 level. I believe in feminism and in my opinion it's a just cause.
However they are two types of feminism.
The Real feminism
African/Unenlightened feminism.
I. Real Feminism
This is the original Picture of feminism Which deals with gender equality, Women empowerment, Women rights, emancipation and freedom.
Now this is the real deal, this is the just cause, the right cause and the one Which I will urge every young lawyer, Professional and educated Person to encourage and fight for.
As far as I am concerned, Women have a voice and say in the society and it is a right that their voice must be heard. Women Must Shine ⭐✨.
II. Misunderstood and Unenlightened African Feminism
This Version of feminism is the Perverted and divided form of feminism.
from
This was more Popularized in Africa and it gives validity to the Statement "If you want to Kill or hide something an African Man, Put it in a book."
This is Heavily profound because, the females who should be faces of the Movement do not Understand what it stands for, they've Painted it into a Materialistic, entitled and emotional Movement, Which reinvents and bases the Movement on Worthless Platitudes.
The men as well, are also highly miseducated, Misinformed and Ignorant in this regard and thus, they see the ideology as Women being Superior to men.
Others who Understand the Concept reject the Idea of men being seen as equal Contemporaries with women.
An average African Man would rather Kill himself than have or even imagine being governed by a female President.
Finally, the society has stereotyped, caged and boxed Women Into a more traditional and Material role.
The African Culture Paints a Woman as a figure who must Cook, Clean, take care of the children, and satisfy the husband's incessant Sexual demands, all this and it's not eyes under a may! It's a Must.
Imagine a whole former Nigerian President Saying that a woman belongs in the Kitchen and in the "Other room", What nonsense!
How is such a generation going to Produce the next Oprah Winfreys, Folorunsho Alakijas, Ngozi Okonjo-Iwealas, Temilade Openiyis, Queen Lateefahs, Keke Palmers, Serena Williams, Asisat Oshoalas, Buchi Emechettas, Chimamanda Ngozi Adiches, to mention a few.
This reminds me of Adah in Buchi Emechetta's Second Class Citizen who was battered and panel beaten by Francis because she chose to opt for family planning, progress and advance her career and eventually after separation he attacked and damaged her belongings.
We Understand it is essential for women to take care of household duties, but as far as things we concerned such duties can be shared in a marriage.
This Misinformed notion about feminism has led to People Fighting for the Wrong Causes and has Spread Wrong information about feminine Liberation and freedom.
Recently I spoke to a so called feminist and I'm sure you all cannot believe that I had to school her on the Movement She claimed to know and Support. This information is key, get Wisdom, get understanding.
WAYS TO COMBAT THIS SURGE
1. More enlightenment and education on real feminism and less Propaganda on the false ones.
2. Men should learn to be more encouraging and respectful to Women and See them More as Contemporaries rather than subjects.
3. The Society should adapt as legendary Apala Maestro, Musiliu Babatunde Ishola said "Aiye ba tin yi, ka ma ba Won yi" meaning as the society evolves, We must also evolve. Gender roles should be fluid, and relegating Women to the kitchen should be stopped.
4. Organizations should sponsor Women and encourage female empowerment by Creating More Jobs, increasing Promotion rates and favourable Salary Packages.
5. The Government of African Nations Should Provide realistic means of female empowerment instead of Petty grants and loans and telling Women to start trying Akara roasting, Corn or selling Kuli Kuli.
In essence, African feminism is a Movement that needs foundational restructuring and Change, females must Make Impact, It is a Just cause, but when a just cause becomes Perverted it is no longer worth fighting for.
