When did being mean become a personality trait?
At some point, being rude stopped being something people were ashamed of and slowly became something they displayed proudly. People now disguise disrespect as “brutal honesty,” humiliation as humor, and emotional unavailability as being strong.
The internet especially has normalized a culture where being cold or insensitive is often seen as confidence. The meanest person in the room is called being real, while kindness is mocked as weakness or pick me.
And honestly, that says a lot about the kind of society we are becoming.
We have become so used to sarcasm, mockery, and emotional detachment that genuine empathy now feels unfamiliar. People laugh at vulnerability, they publicly embarrass others for entertainment, and hide cruelty behind phrases like “I’m just being honest.”
But honesty without empathy is not maturity. It's simply cruelty rebranded as honesty
Somewhere along the line, society began rewarding people for seeming untouchable rather than being compassionate. People are now more afraid of looking “soft” than they are of becoming emotionally disconnected. As a result, kindness is becoming rare, not even because people no longer feel empathy, but because many are afraid of being perceived as weak for showing it.
But there is nothing weak about being kind. There is nothing embarrassing about treating people with empathy. In a world where emotional detachment is constantly encouraged, choosing to remain compassionate may actually be one of the strongest things a person can do.
Because at the end of the day, being cruel does not make someone powerful, superior, or emotionally intelligent. It simply makes them callous and insensitive.
