Jack of All Trades, Master of All.

You've heard the first half of that saying your whole life. "Jack of all trades, master of none" said usually to shut someone down. It's meant to imply that spreading yourself across many things means you're truly good at nothing. It's been used as a warning, a gentle insult, a reason to stay small and stay in one lane. Here's what almost nobody tells you. That's not the full quote.

The real saying goes like this

"Jack of all trades, master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one."

Read that again. The people who trimmed it down to just the first half either didn't know the rest, or knew exactly what they were doing when they left it out. Because the full version isn't an insult at all. It's actually a compliment to people who refuse to be boxed in.

So where did the box come from?

Growing up, many of us watched our parents choose between three, maybe four "acceptable" paths. Doctor. Lawyer. Engineer. Accountant. Anything outside that felt like a gamble, or worse, a disappointment. And once you picked one, that was it. That was your identity now. Your whole self got folded into that title.

So when someone tries to be more than the label society gave them, people panic a little because it's unfamiliar. We were taught depth means staying in one lane forever, not exploring what else you're capable of. And that half-quote became the perfect weapon to keep people there.

But look at what the full proverb is actually saying

It's not saying breadth(trying new things, expanding your horizons) makes you weak. It's saying breadth makes you adaptable, and adaptability is often more valuable than narrow mastery because that is simply versatility. The person who understands five things well can connect ideas the specialist never sees. They can move when one path closes. They can solve problems that sit between disciplines, the exact space where most single-lane experts get stuck.

Versatility isn't the absence of mastery. It's a different kind of mastery, the mastery of connection, of range, of knowing enough about enough things to build something new from the overlap.

Here's what I've realized: versatility isn't betrayal

Society tends to treat multi-passionate people with suspicion, like being vast in more than one area means you weren't serious about the first. But being a midwife doesn't disqualify me from writing or having a seat among financial experts. Being a nurse doesn't mean you can't be tech guru. Being an engineer doesn't mean poetry isn't also yours to claim.

Skill doesn't expire the moment you pick up a second one. If anything, the two often feed each other. The clinician who also writes brings a depth of empathy to their words that theory alone never teaches. The professional who understands a second world outside their training brings something to the table that pure specialists simply can't offer. Nothing is wasted. It just gets combined.

Why this matters even more for Africa

Our continent is at a point where versatility isn't a luxury, it's survival. Youth unemployment across Africa remains one of the most pressing economic issues of our time, and rigid, single-lane thinking about careers doesn't match the reality most young Africans are living in. People are building businesses on the side of their day jobs, creating content while studying medicine, running farms while working in tech, because the old model of "pick one thing and do only that thing" was built for a different economy than the one we're in now.

A continent trying to compete globally, in tech, in creative industries, in healthcare innovation, needs people who can move between disciplines, not people boxed permanently into one identity.

So the next time someone tries to shrink you with half a quote

Remind them of the other half. You were never meant to master one thing and disappear into it. You were built to gather skills, connect them, and become someone no single title could ever fully describe.

Jack of all trades, master of none. But oftentimes, better than a master of one.
