Few social movements have generated as much discussion, controversy and disagreement as feminism. Feminism is broadly understood as a movement advocating for the social, political, economic and legal equality of women and men. Its emergence was largely a response to historical inequalities that restricted women’s participation in education, politics, employment, property ownership and other areas of public and private life.
Today, however, feminism is often viewed from two opposing perspectives. To its supporters, it is a necessary remedy for discrimination, gender-based violence, unequal opportunities and other injustices against women. To some critics, particularly those who associate feminism with its more extreme manifestations, it has become a source of hostility between men and women, rejection of traditional family structures and the unfair treatment of men. This raises an important question: Is feminism the cure to the problems of our society, or has it become a virus that creates new problems?
The answer requires a distinction between feminism as a principle of equality and particular beliefs or behaviours that may be presented in its name. Feminism, properly understood, seeks to remove unjust discrimination against women. However, like any ideology, it can be distorted when equality is replaced by superiority or when legitimate criticism of social structures becomes hostility towards an entire sex.
The Meaning and Development of Feminism
Feminism developed from women’s struggle against systems and practices that denied them equal opportunities and legal recognition. Historically, women in many societies were excluded from political participation, higher education and certain professions. In some legal systems, married women also had limited control over property and financial affairs.
The feminist movement therefore sought reforms that would enable women to participate equally in society. Different waves of feminism focused on different concerns, including voting rights, access to education, employment rights, reproductive autonomy, protection from discrimination and freedom from violence.
It is important to recognise that feminism is not a single, uniform ideology. Liberal feminism, radical feminism, socialist feminism, African feminism and other schools of thought approach gender relations differently. Consequently, criticism of one form of feminism should not automatically be treated as criticism of every feminist principle.
Feminism as a Cure for Society
One of the strongest arguments in favour of feminism is that it challenges discrimination. A society cannot claim to be just while denying individuals opportunities simply because they are women.
In Nigeria, this principle is reflected in the Constitution. Section 42 of the 1999 Constitution prohibits discrimination against a citizen on grounds including sex. (Constitute Project) This constitutional protection demonstrates that equality between men and women is not merely a feminist slogan; it is connected to the fundamental principle of equal citizenship.
Feminism has also contributed to increased awareness of violence against women. Domestic violence, sexual assault, forced marriage, sexual harassment and other forms of abuse can destroy lives and families. The Nigerian Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act 2015 prohibits various forms of violence in both private and public life and provides remedies and punishment for offenders.
Furthermore, feminism encourages women to pursue education and economic independence. An educated and economically empowered woman is better positioned to make decisions concerning her life and contribute to her family and society. This does not mean that men are unnecessary; rather, it means that women should not be prevented from reaching their potential because of their sex.
Feminism has also helped challenge harmful cultural practices. The African Union’s Maputo Protocol recognises women’s rights to dignity, equality and protection from harmful practices and violence. Nigeria signed the Protocol in 2003 and ratified it in 2004, with its instrument deposited in 2005.
The Maputo Protocol is particularly significant because it was designed around African realities rather than simply importing foreign ideas about women’s rights. It addresses civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights of African women and calls for the elimination of discrimination and harmful practices.
Nigeria has also ratified the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), doing so in 1985. (Digital Library) These legal commitments demonstrate that the protection of women’s rights has become an important component of modern human rights law.
Feminism as a Possible “Virus”
Despite the positive contributions of feminism, criticisms of some contemporary feminist ideas cannot simply be dismissed. Like any movement, feminism can be misused or interpreted in ways that produce consequences different from its original objective.
One criticism concerns the transformation of equality into hostility towards men. Feminism should not imply that men are naturally oppressive, dangerous or inferior. A society divided into “men versus women” cannot achieve genuine equality. Men can also experience domestic abuse, emotional difficulties, discrimination and social pressure. A movement committed to justice should recognise human suffering regardless of sex.
Another concern is the possibility of treating traditional family structures as inherently oppressive. Marriage, motherhood, fatherhood and family responsibilities should not automatically be regarded as obstacles to women’s liberation. Women should have the freedom to choose their paths, but genuine freedom includes the freedom to value family life as well as education, employment or political participation.
There is also the danger of replacing one form of inequality with another. If equality is interpreted as giving women privileges simply because they are women, the principle of equality is weakened. Justice should not mean reversing discrimination; it should mean eliminating unjust discrimination.
Furthermore, social media has sometimes encouraged extreme interpretations of gender relations. Statements made by a small number of individuals can be presented as representative of feminism as a whole. This creates unnecessary hostility between young men and women and can make constructive discussions about genuine gender problems more difficult.
Therefore, the “virus” may not necessarily be feminism itself. The greater danger is extremism, misandry, misinformation and the misuse of feminist principles.
The Nigerian and African Perspective
The debate about feminism in Nigeria must take culture and history into account. African societies have their own traditions concerning marriage, family, leadership and gender roles. Some traditions provide valuable social structures, while others have been used to justify discrimination or harmful practices.
African feminism therefore faces a delicate task. It must protect women’s rights without assuming that everything traditionally associated with African family life is oppressive. At the same time, culture cannot be used as an excuse for violating fundamental human rights.
The Maputo Protocol reflects this balance. It recognises women’s equality and dignity while specifically addressing harmful cultural and traditional practices. The African Union describes the Protocol as a comprehensive framework protecting women’s civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights.
Nigeria’s legal framework similarly demonstrates that women’s rights are part of the broader human-rights system. The Constitution prohibits discrimination based on sex, while legislation such as the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act seeks to protect individuals from violence. (Constitute Project)
However, having laws is not enough. The existence of discrimination in practice demonstrates the need for effective enforcement, public education and institutional reform. A 2026 EUAA country report notes that Nigerian law prohibits gender discrimination and that Nigeria has adopted various measures relating to women’s rights, while discrimination continues in practice.
Feminism and Men
A balanced discussion of feminism must also consider men. Equality does not require men to lose their rights or dignity. In fact, men can benefit from the dismantling of rigid gender expectations.
Traditional gender expectations can place enormous pressure on men to be financially successful, emotionally strong, physically dominant and responsible for providing for their families. A society that allows both men and women to develop beyond restrictive stereotypes can benefit everyone.
Consequently, feminism should ideally be understood as a movement against unjust gender discrimination rather than a movement against men. Men should not be treated as enemies merely because they are male, just as women should not be judged negatively merely because they are female.
Finding the Balance
The central question should therefore not be whether feminism is entirely good or entirely bad. The more appropriate question is: What kind of feminism does society need?
Society needs a feminism that demands equal opportunities while recognising equal responsibilities. It needs a feminism that condemns violence against women while also recognising violence against men. It needs a feminism that challenges harmful traditions without treating every tradition as oppressive. It needs a feminism that empowers women without portraying men as enemies.
Similarly, society needs men who support women’s rights without feeling that equality threatens masculinity. Gender equality should not be a competition in which one sex must lose for the other to win.
Conclusion
Feminism has played an important role in addressing genuine social inequalities. Its contribution to women’s education, political participation, legal protection, economic empowerment and freedom from violence cannot reasonably be ignored. Nigerian law and international and African instruments such as the Constitution, CEDAW and the Maputo Protocol demonstrate the importance attached to gender equality and women’s rights. (Constitute Project)
Nevertheless, feminism can become destructive when equality is replaced by hatred, superiority or the unfair generalisation that men are inherently oppressive. Extreme interpretations can deepen the division between the sexes rather than solve it.
Therefore, feminism should not be described simply as the cure or the virus to society. Its original objective of challenging unjust discrimination can be a cure for genuine social problems. However, when distorted into hostility, extremism or discrimination against men, it can contribute to the very social division it seeks to eliminate.
The solution is not to abandon the pursuit of gender equality, but to pursue it fairly. A healthy society should not seek the domination of women over men or men over women. It should seek a society in which both men and women are treated with dignity, afforded equal protection of the law, given fair opportunities, and held equally responsible for their actions.
