Honestly, the statement that "as a biochemist, you can work anywhere" is exhausting.
Is it true? Yes. But here is the real issue...
When lecturers or well-meaning mentors tell you, "Oh, as a biochemist, you can work anywhere," they are actually right. But not for the reasons most people think.
Biochemistry gives you a lens through which you view and understand the entire world. The pathways themselves are secondary compared to the mindset the degree forces you to develop.
You leave Biochemistry with a mind that thinks in systems, not isolations.
A mind that naturally maps interconnections.
A mind forged by intense intellectual rigor.
This quality of mind can find powerful expression in any industry. So yes, as a biochemist, you can work anywhere.
Not because metabolic pathways exist in every field.
Not because you will be discussing glycolysis in a corporate boardroom.
But because the quality of mind developed while studying those pathways is critical to thriving anywhere.
The real problem? We confuse "working anywhere" with "pathways being useful everywhere."
And almost nobody spotlights the people who are actually taking those pathways and making them useful beyond the classroom.
There was a season in my life when I didn't know how my own Biochemistry could go beyond pathways. I loved the lab. I loved the sheer beauty of science. But I desperately wanted to translate Biochemistry beyond basic metabolism.
Do you know how I broke out of that wall?
I found references.
I found two specific biochemists who were building and shining far beyond traditional metabolism.
Finding them was like being given a second chance at life. Suddenly, the confidence came to build everything I am building today.
Just like those two people helped me see beyond molecules and metabolic cycles, my goal is to become a reference for thousands of biochemists across Nigeria.
This is why I do what I do.
This is why I will keep doing it.
