After that day, she began to look for him.
Not intentionally, she told herself.
At least, that was what she liked to believe.
She would walk through the same places a little slower, glance across familiar faces a little longer, and sometimes find herself wondering if he would appear again.
And then, one day, he did.
Not in the way she had imagined.
There was no dramatic entrance.
No perfect moment.
He was simply there.
And this time, she looked a little longer.
She noticed the way he carried himself.
The quiet confidence.
The ease with which he occupied his space.
She noticed his smile too, not the kind that demanded attention, but the kind that arrived gently and somehow made everything around it feel warmer.
She noticed his hands.
The little movements he made when he spoke.
The way he listened when other people talked.
The way he laughed.
The things she had missed in that first glimpse began revealing themselves one after another.
And suddenly, she understood something.
Perhaps beauty was never meant to be discovered all at once.
Perhaps the most beautiful things required time.
She had thought she was drawn to his face.
But now she was beginning to realise that it was everything beneath it that kept her looking.
And wasn't Africa like that too?
At first glance, she had always seemed beautiful.
The colours.
The fabrics.
The music.
The landscapes.
The warmth.
The rhythm.
But the longer you looked, the more there was to find.
There were languages that carried histories older than the borders drawn across maps.
There were stories passed from one generation to another, surviving not merely in books, but in voices.
There were hands that could turn ordinary threads into art, ordinary wood into meaning, ordinary meals into memories.
There were names that carried ancestry.
Songs that carried grief.
Drums that carried celebration.
And people whose lives held stories you could spend years learning.
Africa was not beautiful because she was easy to understand.
She was beautiful because every layer invited another question.
And perhaps that was why she was beginning to fall for him.
Because the more she noticed, the less she felt she knew.
She began noticing the little things.
And the little things began becoming everything.
One afternoon, she caught herself smiling at the thought of him.
She stopped.
Then laughed at herself.
“How ridiculous.”
She still did not know him.
Yet somehow, she was beginning to understand that a person could become familiar before they became known.
Maybe that was the danger of a glimpse.
It makes you curious enough to stay.
And so she stayed curious.
She watched.
She wondered.
She listened.
She learned.
Because she was beginning to understand that if she truly wanted to know him, she could not keep looking only at his face.
She would have to look at his story.
And perhaps, somewhere between the things he showed her and the things she was still yet to discover, she would finally understand why that first glimpse had felt like something more.
Because some people are beautiful when you first see them.
But some become beautiful because you took the time to see them.
And she was only beginning to notice.
Beauty had caught her attention. But the things beneath it were beginning to keep her.
