We have different diseases and diagnoses in the world, but there’s one particular condition that could have been prevented in some cases.
Sickle Cell Disease.
If you knowingly choose to have children with someone whose genotype is incompatible with yours, especially when you both are AS, you need to understand the consequences of that decision.
No, no, no. Love alone is not enough.
You honestly don’t know what a child with sickle cell disease may have to go through. You think, “Oh, they’ll manage it.”
No. They may not.
They may experience excruciating pain, frequent hospital admissions, weakness, fatigue, and may be unable to do things other children can do freely. And sometimes, the complications can be life-threatening.
Why would you knowingly put a child through that just because you chose love over their well-being?
Check your genotype before falling in love. And even if you find yourself already in love, check it.
And if the results are incompatible, please don’t ignore them.
Love can be beautiful, but sometimes love also means making difficult decisions to protect the person who doesn’t even have a voice yet.
Because when the complications start, you may wish you had listened.
And if you lose that child, you may carry that guilt and pain forever.
