🇳🇬 Nigeria at 66: More Than a Celebration
October 1st always feels different.
It is a day when we look at the green and white around us, hear the familiar sound of Arise, O Compatriots , and remember that Nigeria became independent on October 1, 1960.
But beyond the flags, celebrations, and social media posts, I think today is also a good day to ask ourselves ,What does Nigeria mean to us?
Nigeria is the sound of different languages in one room.
It is our food, our music, our fashion, our humour, our creativity and our ability to keep going even when things are difficult.
It is the student studying late at night because they believe their education can change something. It is the entrepreneur starting with almost nothing. It is the young person learning a skill, creating something, speaking up, volunteering, or simply trying to become better than they were yesterday.
Sometimes, when we talk about Nigeria, we focus so much on what is wrong that we forget the people who continue to create, build, dream and hope.
Nigeria is not just a country we inherited. It is a country we are all contributing to, in one way or another.
As we celebrate another Independence Day, may we not only ask what Nigeria can give us, but also ask ourselves
What can I give Nigeria?
Perhaps nation building begins with something as simple as doing our part with honesty, excellence, responsibility and compassion.
Today, I celebrate Nigeria not because everything is perfect, but because there is still so much worth believing in.
Happy Independence Day, Nigeria. 🇳🇬💚🤍💚
