Diabetes is More than "Eating too much sugar"
"Stop eating too much sugar, you'll get diabetes ". That's one of the most common things we hear about diabetes but diabetes is actually far more complex than simply eating sugar.
I had my clinical posting at the endocrinology clinic few weeks ago and I gained some more knowledge and figured out a lot of misconceptions about the condition.
Normally, when we eat, carbohydrates are broken down into glucose which enters the bloodstream then the pancreas respond by producing insulin(an hormone that helps glucose to move from the bloodstream into our cells so it can be used up for energy).
Diabetes develops when this system is disrupted.
In type 1 diabetes, the immune system destroys the pancreatic cells that produce insulin which leaves the body with little to no insulin.
Whereas in type 2 diabetes, the body becomes resistant to insulin, and overtime may start to fail producing enough of it. This leads to glucose remaining in the bloodstream instead of being taken up by cells.
So no,diabetes is not simply caused by eating sugar. Sugar and diet can be a part of the bigger picture, especially when discussing the risk of type 2 diabetes but genetics, body weight, physical activity and some other factors also matter. Type 1 diabetes meanwhile is an autoimmune disease and cannot currently be prevented.
Maybe the real problem isn't actually just diabetes itself, but how poorly we sometimes explain it. People deserve to understand what is actually going on inside their bodies, not just to be told what foods to fear.
I believe better education on this condition begins with understanding the mechanism, not memorising misconceptions and remaining ignorant.
