“Home is where the hearth is”
We hear things like this so often that we rarely stop to questions them. We assume home is supposed to be the place where you feel the safest, where you are understood.
But what happen when home doesn't feel like home?. Can we really say there is no place like home when for some people, home is the very place they are trying to escape?
Some children would rather stay in school than rush home. Some would rather spend hours with friends than return to their own houses. And sometimes, it isn't because they don't love their parents or their families. Sometimes it is because of what they endure when they get home.
Maybe it is the constant criticism
Maybe it is the comparison
Maybe it is the silence
Maybe it is the feeling that no matter what they do, they are never enough.
And perhaps, the saddest part is that some of this children don't even know how to explain it. They simply know they feel light when they are somewhere far from home.
We often tell children “ Home is where you belong”. But belonging isn't created by a four walls, a nice surname or a shared bloodline.
What most people don't know is that a house can give you shelter without giving you comfort, A family can provide for you without making you feel understand, And a place can be called home without ever truly feeling like one.
There is the common saying “There is no place like home “ maybe that's true
But perharps we should ask ourselves “what makes a place feels like home in the first place because where there is love, there should be safety. Where there is family, there should be a connection. And where there a child is growing there should be a place where they don't constantly have to question whether they are enough.
Home shouldn't merely be the place a child returns to
It should be a place where they want to return to.
