What We Found
It had been a long time since the African heritage presentation.
Long enough for life to move on from that day, for new memories to gather, and for whatever had begun between Aderemi and her to become something neither of them needed to name every time they saw each other.
They simply knew.
That evening, they found themselves at an open-air African arts courtyard, away from the noise of the city.
The place breathed colour.
Paintings covered the walls. Sculptures stood beneath the trees. Indigo, kente and Ankara hung beside handmade beads and carved wood. Somewhere nearby, a highlife song played softly, its rhythm mixing with the evening conversations around them.
She stopped to admire a painting.
Aderemi watched her.
“You've been looking at that for five minutes.”
“It's beautiful.”
“So are you.”
She turned to him.
“That was smooth.”
“I've had practice.”
She laughed.
They walked on, shoulder to shoulder, stopping wherever something caught their attention. They spoke about the art, argued playfully over which piece they liked best, and laughed at things only the two of them understood.
There was an ease between them now.
No searching.
No wondering.
Just familiarity.
When the music changed, Aderemi held out his hand.
She raised an eyebrow.
“Here?”
“Why not?”
She laughed, but stepped closer.
They danced beneath the trees, surrounded by colour, rhythm and the warm hum of people celebrating the creativity of a continent that had never stopped creating.
For a moment, she looked around.
Africa was everywhere.
In the art.
In the rhythm.
In the fabrics.
In the languages drifting through the courtyard.
In the hands that had made every beautiful thing around them.
And she realised that perhaps she had spent too long thinking of Africa as something that needed to be explained.
It didn't.
It only needed to be seen.
Aderemi looked at her.
“What are you thinking?"
She smiled.
“That Africa is beautiful.”
He looked around.
“It is.”
“No.” She shook her head. “More than that.”
She looked at the paintings, the people, the colours, the movement.
“It's so many things at once.”
He smiled.
“Like us?”
She looked back at him.
“Exactly.”
The music softened.
He stepped closer.
“I don't want to keep calling you my almost.”
Her smile faded into something tender.
“Then don't.”
“I want something real, defined.. together, forever.”
“You have it.”
“With you?”
“With me.”
He smiled.
Then he kissed her.
Not like a question.
Not like a beginning.
Like a choice.
When they pulled apart, he whispered, “My woman, Orekelewa mi.”
She smiled.
“My man.”
And somehow, saying it aloud made the world feel a little brighter.
They stood together beneath the African evening sky, surrounded by stories created in colour, rhythm, language and form.
Perhaps that was Africa.
Not one story, but countless ones.
Not one people, but millions.
Not one rhythm, but thousands of songs finding their way into the same heartbeat.
A continent vast enough to hold difference without losing connection.
Beautiful enough to inspire.
Strong enough to endure.
Rich enough that no single story could ever contain it.
And somewhere within all those stories, two people had found each other.
She had only meant to catch a glimpse of him.
She never imagined she would spend the rest of the story discovering a continent through his eyes and finding a love that made the world feel a little more like theirs.
Because sometimes, beyond the glimpse, there is a whole world.
And sometimes, if you are lucky,
you find someone with whom you get to discover it.
