She was 7 years old.
It was "just typhoid."
The first antibiotics did not work.
The second ones did not work either.
By the third week, her parents had sold what they could, borrowed money, and were praying that the "last injection" would save her.
She survived.
Thousands of others do not.
This is Antibiotic Resistance.
And it is already in Nigeria. Quiet. But it is taking lives.
How did we get here?
It did not happen in one day.
It started with, "Let me buy amoxicillin at the pharmacy."
With, "I am feeling better, so I will stop the drugs."
With, "I do not have money for lab tests, just give me something strong."
With sharing tablets the way we share food.
We treated antibiotics as if they would never run out.
But bacteria remember.
Every incomplete dose, every fake drug, every time we self-medicated taught them how to survive.
Now they have returned. Stronger.
And our medicines are failing.
This is not fair.
It is not just that a mother must choose between feeding her children and buying drugs that cost ₦80,000.
It is not just that a woman can die after childbirth because infection no longer responds to antibiotics.
It is not just that our younger ones may grow up in a Nigeria where a small cut or surgery can become life-threatening — because the drugs no longer work.
The people with the least access to healthcare are paying the highest price.
But we are African students. And we can act.
We study different courses. We attend different schools. But this is our continent. This is our future. This is our responsibility.
So what can we do?
1. In our homes: Encourage our families to finish their full course of antibiotics. Do not share medications.
2. In our communities: Speak about it. Post about it. Teach someone this week that fever does not always mean antibiotics.
3. To our leaders: Demand regulation. Medicines should not be sold without prescriptions. Laboratory testing should not be a luxury.
4. For ourselves: The day will come when we will be the ones leading in health, policy, and business. Let us lead with integrity.
Silence is agreement. And we did not come together to remain silent.
Let us be honest
If your brother calls you tomorrow and says, "I have a fever, should I buy antibiotics?" ; what will you tell him?
And what is one thing we, as African students, can start doing this month,on our campuses and online to fight this silent pandemic?

Let us talk. Let us learn. Let us act.
Because health is not a privilege.
It is a right.
And we deserve a future where medicine still works.
